GO!

(Monster Town)

Life on the surface was going pretty well for the Underground monsters after the barrier to the surface was broken. While the monsters seemed able to integrate with human society well enough, it was still a work in progress to be accepted completely. Frisk, the small, young human that helped free the monsters, had become their ambassador to humans and had spent a good amount of time since the breaking of the barrier trying to help humans understand them better.

The monsters had established a community near a large city that was somewhat close to the mountain that previously contained all the monsters. Frisk was currently living with Toriel, in a large house with several of the friends that the young human had met in their adventure underground.

Currently, a small, lizard-like monster was strolling down a sidewalk on a cloudy day, somehow wearing a backback despite not having any arms to hold it in place. School had just finished for the day and the students (mostly monsters at this new school) had gone their separate ways for the day to head home. The armless monster seemed cheerful as they continued down the sidewalk, humming a little bit before suddenly tripping over nothing and falling flat on their face.

Monster Kid gave a childish laugh as they hoisted themselves back onto their feet. It seemed that this was a normal occurrence, as they were able to get up easily despite the lack of arms, showing a bit of experience in knowing what to do.

“Hmm…Maybe I’ll swing by Frisk’s place later, yo.” Monster Kid said to themselves. “I wonder why they weren’t at class today…I hope they’re not sick, yo…”

Monster Kid had been getting pretty close with the young human since coming to the surface. They admired Frisk for their perseverance, as they were able to juggle both school and being the monster race’s ambassador to the humans, no easy task in itself. Monster Kid wouldn’t call their friendship with Frisk an attraction (because Monster Kid would often go into a spiel about cooties or something), but the two were still very close friends regardless.

That said, Monster Kid was a little let down when Frisk wasn’t there at school today. Usually they were a dedicated student, especially since Toriel, their adopted mother, was a teacher at the monster school. Monster Kid only saw Toriel in passing today so they didn’t have a chance to ask about Frisk, but they figured Frisk was either too sick to come to school or too busy with ambassador duties that they had to skip a day.

The small, cheerful monster continued to walk down the sidewalk for a bit before tripping over their feet again. Monster Kid got to their feet again, but when they did they saw that a shadow was standing over them. Monster Kid slowly turned around to see a new human with long, black hair in dreadlocks standing over him, dressed in a black cloak. Monster Kid backpedaled in surprise and fear, allowing them to catch a glimpse of a dark portal behind the man, something he had apparently stepped out of.

“Uh…Y-Yo?” Monster Kid said nervously.

“You mentioned the name ‘Frisk’.” The man said, somewhat bluntly but in a slightly-soft and confident voice. “Would you, perchance, be referring to the human Frisk that I’ve heard so much about from this world?”

“Uh…Huh?” Monster Kid asked.

“I don’t suppose I could convince you to tell me where I can find them?”

When Organization XIII heard about the young human Frisk and the strength of their heart, determination and willpower, they automatically knew the child would make for an excellent Heartless and Nobody. Xaldin had been dispatched to do the deed, but the dreadlocked Nobody had seen no sign of the target in question since arriving. He had overheard Monster Kid talking to themselves and had warped over to see if he could speed up his mission.

“I…I dunno if I should t-tell you, yo.” Monster Kid said, slowly backing away.

“Child, I’m only going to ask this one more time.” Xaldin said, his smile somehow looking more sinister despite not changing at all. A spear materialized in his hand as Xaldin pointed it down at Monster Kid. “Tell me where I can find the human.”

Monster Kid’s eyes widened in horror as Xaldin stood over him, spear dangerously-close to his face. Still, Monster Kid stood his ground. “N-No way, yo!” He stammered defiantly. “I-I’m not afraid of you!”

Xaldin’s look darkened as he pulled his spear into the air. “So be it. Hopefully you’ll spawn a Nobody as well…” He muttered.

*SHING!*

Monster Kid closed their eyes in fear, anticipating the end, which surprisingly never came. Monster Kid slowly opened an eye and suddenly saw a new figure standing in between them and Xaldin, holding Xaldin’s spear off with a blue spear of her own.

The figure turned their head to look down at Monster Kid, showing a fish-like face with red hair and only one eye. “You’re that loyal to Frisk, huh Kid?” She asked. “You got real guts. I like that.”

“U-Undyne!” Monster Kid said in awe.

“U-Undyne!” A new voice repeated. Monster Kid looked across the street and saw a yellow dinosaur girl running across the street, showing that Undyne herself had come across the street in the blink of an eye to intervene.

“Alphys, take Kid back to their house.” Undyne said, still in a locked-weapons stance with Xaldin. “I’ll deal with Mr. Personality here.”

“B-Be careful, Undyne!” Alphys nodded as she quickly ushered Monster Kid away, trying to get the child out of the area so Undyne could get to work without any worries. “I don’t like the look of him!”

“He definitely ain’t human, I can tell that.” Undyne muttered. “Just go! I’ll meet you at your place later, okay?”

“O-Okay.”

Once Alphys led Monster Kid safely away from the potential carnage, Undyne pushed Xaldin back, giving herself enough time to get into a stance, spear in hand. “You got some nerve, mac. Trying to kill a defenseless little kid like that?” Undyne said with a scoff. “You’re a bigger monster than I am!”

Xaldin narrowed his eyes. “I seek nothing but the human Frisk.” He said simply.

“So you can do to THEM what you tried to do to Monster Kid?” Undyne narrowed her good eye. “Sorry, but I’ve kinda grown attached to the kid.”

Xaldin grunted and waved his hands, summoning several more spears out of the air and grabbing a few of them while the rest floated in the air. “You brought this on yourself for intervening, creature.” He spat.

Undyne gave a sly smirk as she summoned several more spears herself, all of them floating in the air above her as she held a spear in her hand. “The only one asking for a beating around here is you.” She said. “I wonder if I can perforate that dumb cloak…”

“You’re welcome to try.” Xaldin said darkly as he bore down on the fish monster.

MAY THE BLATANTLY-FRUSTRATING BOSS BATTLE BEGIN!
FIGHT!

(60 Seconds)

Undyne swung a hand, launching several spears at Xaldin as he did the same, making the spears bounce and repel off each other. Xaldin hurled a spear at Undyne, which flew through the carnage of spears clashing, but Undyne showed quick reflexes and ducked under the blow. Undyne flashed a grin and leapt at Xaldin, generating two spears in her hands as she did, and let herself fall towards the cloaked Nobody with the intent to impale.

Xaldin backpedaled away as Undyne slammed both of her spears into the sidewalk, and then swung a hand, which launched several of the floating spears at the fish warrior. Undyne deflected the blows by using a spear as a staff, but when Xaldin did the same and swung a spear like a club, Undyne took the blow to the face and staggered to the side, giving Xaldin the opportunity to follow up with a combo of physical blows.

Gritting her shark-like teeth in frustration, Undyne reached out and grabbed one of Xaldin’s weapons as he was preparing to strike her with it and yanked it out of his grasp. Undyne quickly swung hard, striking Xaldin in the chin with the blunt end of his own spear, launching him back, and followed it by hurling the spear back at him with all her might. Xaldin landed in a crouching position and quickly used his powers to stop the spear before it struck him, mentally bringing it to float with the others.

Using his powers over wind, Xaldin levitated the floating spears around Undyne as they started to circle her. Undyne narrowed her good eye, held her spears and spun around with them outstretched, deflecting all of the spears as they were lunging at her from all sides. Undyne stopped spinning and crouched low, glaring at Xaldin and preparing to pounce, but at the same time daring him to act first.

(50 Seconds)

Xaldin crouched low to match Undyne’s stance, and then shot forward with lightning speed, spear outstretched and powered by the wind. Undyne leapt into the air and front-flipped over Xaldin, kicking him in the back on her way down and propelling herself into the air even further in the form of a double-jump. Undyne landed gracefully on her feet and spun around, throwing a spear of pure energy at Xaldin from behind.

The Nobody’s reaction was quicker than Undyne anticipated, however, as Xaldin spun around and swung a spear like a baseball bat, striking Undyne’s spear and disintegrating it upon contact. Xaldin narrowed his eyes and started concentrated, surrounding himself with wind as the spears spun around him in a circle. Once all of the spears were spinning, Xaldin rushed Undyne again.

Undyne held up a spear to block the blows, and while she managed to hold Xaldin off for a few seconds, Xaldin broke through her determination with brute force, striking her multiple times with his spears. Seeing that he had managed to break through Undyne’s defenses, Xaldin pressed his attack and struck her a few more times, then stopped spinning the spears in time to grab one of them and strike Undyne with it a few times.

The last blow in Xaldin’s combo sent Undyne flying away several feet, but the fish woman managed to upright herself in midair and landed in a crouching position, skidding to a halt by digging a spear into the sidewalk. Narrowing her eye, Undyne wiped a bit of blood off of her mouth.

“Okay. This is going to be harder than I thought.” Undyne muttered to herself.

Xaldin pulled his hands back and prepared to launch every spear he had at Undyne. “You shouldn’t have interfered.” He said simply.

(40 Seconds)

Xaldin lashed out his hands and sent all of his collected spears flying at Undyne while the fish woman stood her ground. Undyne, undeterred, grabbed a tile on the sidewalk and, showing incredible strength, uprooted the tile with her bare hands, holding it in front of her like a shield. Xaldin’s eyes widened in surprise as he watched his spears embed themselves in Undyne’s makeshift shield, leaving her untouched.

Undyne wasn’t done, however, as she hurled the spear-filled tile at Xaldin, and then ran after it. Xaldin held up his arms and grit his teeth as the tile struck him and bounced off his arms, but Undyne suddenly burst through the airborne tile in a flying kick, letting out a battle cry as she landed a hard kick to the Nobody’s face. Xaldin staggered backwards, holding his head in pain, as Undyne pressed the attack and rushed him again.

The angry fish warrior landed blow after blow, even lashing out with her head a couple of times to sneak a blow in. Xaldin tried to gather his bearings to summon some more spears, but Undyne’s draw was quicker and she wasn’t giving him any breathing room. Undyne elbowed Xaldin in the stomach, then grabbed him to give him a powerful suplex, bouncing Xaldin off the pavement and sending him sprawling.

Ironically, this gave Xaldin time to get his thoughts together since Undyne had momentarily stopped attacking him. Quickly stopping himself, Xaldin summoned some more spears and hurled some of them at Undyne while racing at her, holding another spear in his hand. Undyne dodged the spears, summoned a spear of her own and raced to meet Xaldin halfway, a wide and sinister grin on her face as both fighters swung their makeshift weapons like swords.

*CLANG!*

(30 Seconds)

The spears locked. Xaldin and Undyne clashed, the two makeshift swords pressed against each other with the intent to break through their opponent’s guard. The clash lasted a few seconds, but because Undyne was stronger than Xaldin (like, by a LOT), she easily won the clash, pushing the Nobody back, breaking through his guard and kicking him in the stomach. Undyne leapt into the air and followed up with a roundhouse, aiming for Xaldin’s head.

However, Undyne’s foot hit nothing but air. Xaldin disappeared in a dark wisp of shadow, leaving Undyne to recover from her own failed attack. Because she was left open for attack, Undyne wasn’t prepared to be struck from the side, and then again from behind. Xaldin teleported around his opponent a couple of times, finishing the combo by grabbing her and throwing her through a dark portal, which deposited Undyne high above the ground, causing her to start free-falling towards the ground.

In spite of the fact that she was more than a hundred feet in the air, Undyne grinned and steered herself towards a nearby building, summoning a couple of spears in her hands as she did. Undyne proceeded to run down the side of the building, straight towards Xaldin, who was preparing to launch another volley of spears at her. Undyne leapt off the side of the building and avoided being hit by a spear as she directed herself above Xaldin…

Narrowing his eyes, Xaldin teleported again as Undyne hit the ground in an epic fashion with enough force to create a tremor and crater upon landing.

“Okay! Where’d ya go THIS time, you punk!” Undyne shouted, looking around for her opponent. “No one chickens out on a fight with ME!”

Hearing a noise behind her, Undyne turned around and readied herself, only to stop when she found herself staring up at a huge, flying, serpent-like creature made of spears, Xaldin perched on top like a rider. Xaldin focused his energy and a huge ball of energy started forming around where the spear creature’s head was. Undyne narrowed her good eye and readied herself again, holding up her guard.

(20 Seconds)

The spear serpent spat out a beam of wind, striking Undyne with full force and hitting her multiple times. Undyne grit her teeth and put up with the pain, knowing that if she dropped her guard she’d probably get hit even harder. Undyne waited for the beam to stop, which admittedly took a lot longer than she was hoping for, but when it did Undyne quickly summoned some spears in midair to strike the creature from all sides.

Xaldin rolled his eyes in annoyance as he used his powers to deflect Undyne’s spears. “Why do you insist on doing that?!” He demanded.

However, when Xaldin was done disposing of Undyne’s spears, he saw that Undyne wasn’t on the ground anymore. He looked around the streets to see where his opponent had gone, but didn’t see any sight of her. He cautiously continued to look around from his perch on top of the spear serpent to see where she had gone…

…And then he shouted out in pain when a blue spear of pure determination shot through his shoulder. Clutching his shoulder in pain Xaldin turned around and saw that Undyne was holding onto the tail of his spear serpent, refusing to let go as she was being carried through the air. Xaldin’s eyes widened as he summoned some more spears to knock Undyne off before she could climb on.

The spear serpent continued to fly through the sky, and the tail ended up flicking Undyne into the air, straight towards some of Xaldin’s spears that he had summoned. Undyne shouted in pain as the spears clipped her sides and shoulders, but Undyne managed to land feet-first on the back of the spear serpent, bloody but still alive, and looking EXTREMELY determined. Undyne took a couple of steps forward, starting to make her way towards Xaldin.

(10 Seconds)

Xaldin started to panic and lashed out his hands several times, firing several balls of wind energy at Undyne in an attempt to knock her off. Undyne took that as a challenge and, letting out a battle cry, she ran headlong down the back of the spear serpent, an extremely-menacing look in her good eye. Undyne took a blow to the face as she was running, as a wind projectile managed to stay on target, but Undyne’s willpower proved to be too strong as she ran straight through it without even batting an eyelash.

Now seeing that his opponent was cornering him, Xaldin summoned all the spears he could muster, filling the sky with pointed projectiles in an attempt to fire them all at the fish warrior, hoping that he would get lucky and kill her with at least one of them. Before Xaldin could act, however, Undyne leapt high into the air, soaring above him before she started coming down.

Xaldin’s eyes snapped open.

*CRASH!*

Undyne crashed headfirst into Xaldin, piledriving him straight through the head of his spear serpent, destroying the entire thing in one powerful blow.

(5…)

The two fighters fell through a sea of spears, some leftovers from the serpent and some having been summoned moments before.

(4…)

Xaldin tried to force Undyne off of him as the two fell headlong towards the streets below.

(3…)

Undyne grinned widely, showing a full set of pointed, shark-like teeth.

(2…)

Undyne generated a blue spear in her hand and pulled it into the air as she stayed on top of Xaldin.

(1…)

The two fell to the streets below, cries in disbelief from one and a psychotic battle cry from the other echoing through the air.

*CRASH!*

KO!

Spears rained down on the streets, surrounding the small crater that Undyne and Xaldin had made in the streets but somehow how touching the two. Undyne was still on top of Xaldin, and still smirking in victory, holding onto the spear that she had summoned into her hand during the freefall.

…The pointed end of the spear was currently impaling Xaldin through the chest and pinning him to the street below.

Xaldin, seeing that Undyne had soundly beaten him (especially due to the fact that he was now impaled on a spear), could only stare at the blue spear protruding from his chest, weakly turning his glance to Undyne.

“I may have sworn off killing humans, but I…Really don’t think you count.” Undyne said, her good eye narrowed.

Xaldin couldn’t help but give a weak chuckle. “No…I suppose not…” He muttered before glancing up at Undyne. “Your willpower…”

Undyne rolled her eye. “Yeah, I know. It’s amazing.” She said. “I get that a lot.”

“You…Would have made…A fantasic…Nobody…”

With his final words spoken, Xaldin dispersed into nothingness, turning into shadowy vapor as he did until his entire body had vanished into the air, the last of his shadowy remains fading out, leaving Undyne’s spear still impaled in the street.

Undyne sighed as she stood up, making her spear vanish. “Whatever THAT meant.” She said.

Undyne took the time to glance at one of her wounds on her side, showing a fair amount of bleeding. “Ugh…I’m going to need to get that patched up. Alphys is going to HATE me having to bloody up her house.” She muttered. “Maybe she can bring bandages onto her front yard…”

“UNDYNE!”

Undyne turned and saw a tall, lanky skeleton wearing white armour rushing over to her. She also noticed that he was looking a little beaten himself. “What’s up, Pap? Yeesh, you look like crap. You got some bullies you want me to deal with?” She asked.

“UNDYNE, IT’S FRISK! SOMEONE’S TRYING TO KILL THEM!” Papyrus insisted.

“Yeah, I just dealt with the guy. No biggie.” Undyne said.

“WHAT?...N-NO, I MEAN SOMEONE ELSE! I WAS BARELY ABLE TO GET FRISK AWAY FROM THAT HORRIBLE HUMAN! FRISK…FRISK WAS BEATEN SO BADLY…”

Undyne’s good eye snapped open. “What?! What happened?!” She asked.

“I DON’T KNOW! HE JUST APPEARED OUT OF NOWHERE AND HE TRIED TO KILL ME WHEN I DEFENDED FRISK!” Papyrus continued. “I GOT FRISK TO TORIEL SO THAT SHE COULD PATCH THEM UP, BUT SANS IS STILL FIGHTING THE HORRIBLE MAN!”

“SANS?! You left SANS to fight someone?!” Undyne asked.

“E-EVERYTHING HAPPENED SO FAST! SANS JUST TOLD ME TO GET FRISK TO TORIEL AND THEN COME FIND YOU!”

“Lead the way, Pap!” Undyne said. “He’s trying to stall for time so that I can come in and finish the job!”

“O-OH! RIGHT! FOLLOW ME!”

Undyne followed Papyrus down the street, forgetting about her wounds. It seemed her day wasn’t quite done…

This melee’s winner is…

UNDYNE
One Minute Melee.

To this day, Xaldin is still the hardest fight for me in Kingdom Hearts 2, largely because of how cheaply frustrating he is. I admit that writing this felt good. Plus, with Undyne winning and all and Papyrus meeting up with her, this serves as a bit of a setup for a future matchup I have planned...

Hint for next battle: Someone needs to throw these guys a bone due to them being weak. Not sure if pitting them against each other is the best way to do it, though...

I still can't believe that we had BOTH did a fight that involving an Undertale character using their spears to battle. I didn't even noticed until I was writing my own fight.

But yeah, now that I think about it, I am surprised that this fight hasn't already been a thing. I think you did a great job on this.
